Growing industries like fashion, small-scale manufacturing units and social and technological initiatives on road safety were the highlight of the Muscat Youth Summit on Monday.
A series of interactive workshops that inspired students were held on the second day of the summit. In one of the sessions, students studied the potential of bicycle manufacturing as a business with environmental and health benefits. The session explored career opportunities such as production, maintenance and recycling in the bicycle industry. Students realised that all components of a bicycle could be created from recycled aluminium, steel and rubber, and be recycled again later.
A workshop on 'Road safety in the digital world' explored how technology can be used to develop road safety content and material for a wider virtual audience. “Road safety is a great challenge facing Oman. We are therefore combining the desire and passion for change with the most innovative technologies and creating a platform that will allow students to make a difference in society,” said Fathi al Riyami from Cosmic Surrounding Technology, which provides ser-vices like e-learning, training and professional development.
“Social networks, movies and videos make a great impact on the general public when it comes to road safety. Young people think it is cool to not wear seat belts and speed. By continuously showing them the consequences of their actions, we will be able to bring about a change,” said Haitham al Lawati, a participating student from Azzan bin Qais School.
Other workshops included ‘Share the Road’ where participants were required to devise an initiative highlighting the need for safer driving and infrastructure for an alternative public transport system in Muscat.
