VDR capsule recovered from ‘Baltic Ace’
VDR capsule recovered from ‘Baltic Ace’

Israel based marine electronics developer and supplier, Totem Plus, has recovered the voyage data recorder (VDR) capsule from the 'Baltic Ace', which sank in the North Sea, west of Rotterdam, on 5 December 2012.

The 148m car carrier collided with the container vessel, Corvus J, in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the North Sea. The vessel sank shortly after the collision, leaving 11 dead.

Rough weather and debris prevented divers from recovering the VDR capsule earlier. A Totem Plus technician has confirmed that the data in the capsule is intact and has handed it over to authorities for thorough analysis of the incident.

Merav Levy, marketing manager, Totem Plus, told The Motorship: “Analysing the data is carried out by the proper authorities, like Flag, and is very sensitive. It is likely to be presented at court and so is highly confidential. We will have to be patient and wait for the result of their investigation.”

Ms Levy was unable to provide any further information at this time.
